How to Raise Future Leaders to Mentor Future Leaders

Muneer A. Rasheed's 10 Steps to Raise Teams of Leaders

The Multiplication Principle!

In the quran, there is a line that reads:

I want for my brother what I want for myself

The key to sustainable quality leadership is replication.

By following the process of replication you raise leaders in all sectors of society. The only question is what you are replicating!

Islamic leadership progresses through mentorship and coaching others to bring out the leader in them.

Your role is not to only serve as a cheerleader, but to “actively” participate in the development process.

The stages are as follow:

1. One on One time:. Use one on one time to address those areas that will enhance individual development. You can make personal observations that may not suit a group setting.

2. Small groups: Small groups are good for exchanges and to allow each participant to benefit from each others experiences.

3. Provide techniques and demonstrate their application:. Demonstrate Leadership techniques through role plays. Much like a martial arts instructor you provide participants a safe environment to make mistakes before the face a potential real situation.

4. Provide real and hypothetical examples: The more examples the budding leader has the more there is to draw from in when faced with various situations.

5. Provide progressively more advanced challenges according to individual ability: As in all disciplines; you want to systematically provide for greater creativity in problem solving, strategy development and innovation.

6. Challenge the mentoree to think outside the box: Although rocket science is truly rocket science. Encourage participants to think outside the traditional box to find alternative paths when required.

7. Debrief both success and failure: Debriefing allows the participant to examine what worked and didn’t work and more importantly the reasons behind both. This will allow for replication of the former while recognizing the warning signs of the later.

8. Allow them to lead the mentoring process while you observe: Allow the participants to start the mentoring process with new recruits while you serve as an observer.

9. Allow mentorees to fly: Let those you have developed continue the mentor process with those they are developing while you make yourself available as a coach.

10. Coda:Go to the top and repeat the process with future leaders!
