PPIM; The World Muslim Consumer Association's Past Present and Future

PPIM (The World Muslim Consumer Association) was established 13years ago in Malaysia under the principle of providing dignity to the Muslim Consumer and the Ummah in general.

Realizing that what Muslims consumed impacted them physically and spiritually; it was important that an advocacy group be in place to assure that Muslim consumer’s rights were protected.

The principles under which The World Muslim Consumer Association is founded are as follows”

1. To Promote Islamic Consumerism

2. To Empower the Muslim Consumer by educating them on consumer right and responsibilities.

3. To Promote Corporate Social Responsibility

4. To serve as a buffer and coordinator between the Government agencies and consumers

Today, to meet the ever broadening need of the Muslim consumer; PPIM has taken on even greater responsibility.

Locally (Malaysia) PPIM works to assist those Muslims that are being buried under spiraling re-payment schemes that the Ah Longs (illegal money lenders) demand.

Because of these exuberant repayments, many borrowers often find is difficult to make payments. As a result coercive measures, threats and physical violence were often used by the Ah-Longs as a means to receive payment.

Not wanting borrowers to be subjected to mistreatment; PPIM now serves as an intermediary between the borrower who seeks help and the money lender(s).

PPIM is also actively involved in social causes which are important to local and international Muslim communities.

As a result, representatives are regularly sought out by media (domestic and international), and various forums to discuss boycotts and the plight of the disenfranchised around the world.

On the business front; PPIM works with SME’S that need assistance in growing their business. This is accomplished through Consultation, Networking and Educational Opportunities.

PPIM takes on this responsibility because it understands the need for Muslim businesses to have a presence not only here in Malaysia, but also internationally.

The question is often asked: Does PPIM only work with Muslim businesses?

The simpliest way to answer is by saying while those businesses which are not Muslim can not join The Blue Mosque (Business membership) Fraternity under PPIM; there is a provision in place to recognize their special status.

That status is that of a (MFO) Muslim Friendly Organization.

A Muslim Friendly Organization is one which runs its business in a manner that does not operate in a manner that compromises Muslim practices and beliefs, respects Muslim employees and is friendly to Muslim Consumers in general.

To date, three (3) companies have received this recognition from PPIM:

Gardenia, Okamizu and Uptrend!

What does the future hold for PPIM? Insha’Allah, PPIM will continue working to Protect Muslim Consumer Rights locally, Promote Muslim Consumerism Globally, Develop Strategic Partnerships with Muslim Friendly Organizations and be a strong voice against injuctices committed against Muslims.

PPIM realizes that Muslim strength is in our unity. Therefore, it is our prayer that you call to see how you can join PPIM today!
