How To Stop Running Your NGO
by
Muneer A. Rasheed

Is it possible that you are running an NGO (No Good Organization) and not know it?

What are some of the characteristics of a No Good Organization?

  • General top down apathy throughout the organization

  • ”The Weekend Planner”: Workers making plans for the weekend when it’s only Monday afternoon

  • Backbiting and gossip on how the company is on its last legs or about other wokers

What brings this illness about and what can the organization do to stop this trend inorder to bring it to a healthy state?

Let’s examine the NGO characteristics individually.

Apathy: When workers see, hear, feel leadership is in a malaise; they will tend to emulate the characteristics of which they are subjected.

This in turn cause management even more concern over the future which causes more worry among the rank and file employee.

The being a downward spiral that if not stopped will cripple the organization.

      Possible solution:

Set up an information hotline that employees can call to air their concerns.

Having someone available to listen to them serves as a release valve and reduces the power of rumors.

”The Weekend Planner” These are employees who on Monday are already planning what they will do the coming weekend.

Action! Sometimes to stop the advance weekend planner you have to “Fight Fire with Fire”

In order for fire fighters to save larger sections of forest or properties they will burn off a section of forest ahead of the approaching fire. They do this so that when the fire reaches that section there is little or no fuel to keep it going and it burns itself out.

      Possible Solution:

List in you company bulletin various events that will take place in and around the city for the next one or two months.

Providing employees with a diverse selection of activities and using a little creativity will allow them to plan their weekends in advance with minimum interference to their work.

Backbiting the org. and gossip Let’s get right to…

      Possible Solution:

Face it! If “You” (collective) don’t take part in it either passively or actively, one key link of the chain is removed.

Some practical ways backbiting can be addressed in the organization are:

      1. Management can have 1 to 1 communication with those observed that are directly (Not rumored) involved with this type of behavior.

      2. Address the implications of this type of behavior in the company bulletin.

      3. Bring in outside assistance to find a solution to this cancer in the organization.

In circumventing 1.“Apathy" 2."The Weekend Planner” 3.“The Backbiting gossiper

You can transform your “NGO” into a

      “GO”... Good Organization!
