Muneer A. Rasheed's "Thoughts on Influence"
When one thinks of influence the thought come to mind of the sales person who convinces you to purchase something that you absolutely don’t need!
But, is that what it is?
One definition:
in•flu•ence Pronunciation[in-floo-uh ns] noun, verb, -enced, -enc•ing. –noun
1. the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others: He used family influence to get the contract.
However, to positively sway someone or a group in your favor is to first speak in terms of their self interest.
How does what you propose benefit the other person in terms of:
• Emotional needs
• Career
• Financially
Emotional: If the person or group you seek to gain approval are on track to receive some form of accolade as a result of supporting you; getting them to move in the direction you desire is easier.
Career: If a group or individual have the perception that what you are seeking is self serving; you will find yourself like a person attempting to swim against a riptide.
The more you struggle to sway, the further you move from your objective.
The best maneuver is to show that by your upward move, you will in fact be in a good position to serve as an advocate for the need(s) of the individual or group.
Therefore, referring back to the swimming example...
If you swim perpendicular to the shore when caught in a riptide, you expend less energy and are still able to arrive at you intended goal!
Financial: Lets face it; financial incentives are still viewed as a common denominator when one seeks to sway the hearts and minds of others.
However, ethically as Muslims, no monies should be given for the purpose of swaying the hearts of those from whom we seek favor.
Ultimately, we have to depend on Allah’s Blessings to bring about the favorable changes we desire!
Salaam (peace)
