Muneer A. Rasheed says "Employee Health is Wealth"
Employee Health is Wealth to the Organization!
There is an old saying that...
“All work and no play make Johnny a dull boy!”
Today, with our unhealthy diets and lack of exercise we may now say:
“All work and poor personal health care shortens Johnny’s life!”
It’s ironic that as people across the globe become better off economically; the quality of their lives in the way of physical fitness conversely seems to decline.
We now see (especially in developed countries) rampant obesity and the accompanying health related problems.
The nutritional intake that is supposed to sustain life is in fact a ticking time bomb ready to explode.
The explosion comes in the form of:
• Heart problems
• High (bad) Cholesterol
• High Blood Pressure
• Diabetes and related problems!
In the past, an agrarian lifestyle offered a natural form of exercise through the daily work performed.
Now, the only exercise that many office workers get during the day is finger exercise by typing on the computer!
However, the injuries that may result (wrist, back and neck)do not garner the same type of sympathy as those who get real sports related bruises!
The most proactive of this (health conscious) lot join a health club to balance out the day’s strenuous workout behind the desk.
Even among some of these avid health clubbers you find those who upon completion of their workout rush to get “Super Sized”! at the nearest fast food or other unhealthy food establishment.
People who consume this type of diet not only replenish the calories they lost during their workout...
They in fact, add even more calories thinking they need the energy for when they go back to the health club!
Still there is a multitude of others whose exercise consists of thinking about how they need to do it...someday.
Years later; they are the very ones who you hear singing the:
I wish I could’ve would’ve should’ve song!
I wish: I wish I had started exercising when I was younger
I could’ve: I could have exercised, if I weren’t so busy
I would’ve: I would have exercised if my husband / wife would have gone to the club with me.
I should’ve: I should have paid more attention to the junk I stuffed in my mouth! Now look at me; I'm as big as a (fill it in for yourself)
A healthy person makes for a more productive employee both mentally and physically.
Reduced issues as a result of poor conditioning (time away from the office and lower insurance rates) mean the corporation, the client all gain from physically fit employees.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon organizations to find ways in the form of incentives that will encourage employees toward better personal life style choices!
Here are a few suggestions
Make arrangements to have employees examined onsite for diabetes and high Cholesterol levels. (Twice/year)
Provide easy to follow information on ways to workout at the work place and good nutritional habits!
Invite speakers/health coaches that can dicuss the "How to" of achieving a healthy lifestyle.
Recognition of employees who have made improvements to their health!
(Certifiate of recognition or mention them in the company news letter)
Those are just a few things that you can do to encourage your employees to live healthier and wealthier!
