Muneer A. Rasheed’s "Three Reasons for a Change"
Does Your Organization Need a Change?
It is not always easy to determine when a consultant is required.
In fact, by the time one is needed the organization may require emergency surgery rather than prescriptive.
The consultant’s job doesn’t encompass putting on a feel good power point workshop.
These serve little more than provide a Prozac that makes management pat itself on the back believing that its making strides by equipping employees.
The participants coming away from these sessions go away with the feeling of being to the proverbial mountain top; where the thin air gives them the sense of being able to fly.
The consultant also from his/her lofty podium also away mistakenly believes the words of wisdom handed down and workshop games will magically transform (metamorphosis) the organization.
"The three reasons" can be summarized as follows:
1. When an organization is stalled
Organizations that are not progressing are in fact drifting in reverse.
No one realizes this action due to comfortable position they find themselves.
I call this “The model T syndrome”!
Usually, by the time the organization realizes its situation it’s looking at the rear bumpers of the cars that have already passed.
These organizations have a sense that they need to take action, but either…
• Don’t know what should be done
• Don’t know how to bring about the change
• Don’t want to acknowledge that there is problem
2. The organization is in obvious trouble
These are the companies that have:
• Frequent loses to key personnel
• Losing market share to the competition
• No team mentality: Employees are just working for
the pay.
3. When everything is going well!
The reason for this is that it is when things are going well, you can most afford to move the organization to the next level.
The resources are available to foster growth without agonizing over financial issues.
The end result of any intervention is for the company to have concrete plans that will bring about the changes to the organization and the individual.
If you want a temporary high; Forget the traditional motivation rah-rah workshop and buy a box of doughnuts.
The results will be the same and doughnuts are a lot cheaper!
