Have you ever wondered;just How Do Consultants Get Started in their careers?

Well, many have started out where you are today!

Many consultants have come out of corporations, small businesses, IT, Law, Engineering, Education, Medical and virtually every other profession.

Some people have come into consulting naturally.

They have found that they have over they years they have dispensed tons of free advice.

And on occasion... reluctantly (tongue in cheek) accepted payment for their knowledge.

Others have been providing unpaid advice and realized that they should be getting compensated for it!



Another path people take to becoming a consultant is through their being the victims of corporate downsizing, retirement or being fired!

Any of these will place a person in the position to start thinking about:

”What will I do now?”

For those who do not know how to consult; here are some suggestions!

1. Find a mentor: Read (Here) to learn "How to Benefit as a Mentoree"

2. Check local colleges for programs they offer for aspiring consultanhts

3. Get books on consulting

Although you may have come from a specialist background you should still consider becoming a "Generalist" that also has a specialty!

Why?

As a generalist do not suffer from "Feast or Famine" treands of specialty industries.

You are always needed!As a generalist, you deal with "processes" not "content" You will also discover that as a generalist, there is more leverage for you to utilize your years of experience for the improvement of the organization that your assisting.


Still, no matter which path one takes; the realization comes that as a consultant, one can do what they love, get paid for it and be their own boss!
