Muneer A. Rasheed Says It's Not Personal..It's Business!
You may recognize the title of this article "It's not personal.. It’s Business from one of the scenes from the movie The Godfather!
It seems to me that the central meaning behind that line was to not let emotion steer your company's decisions.
Often when I think about that line, it brings to mind the decisions that those who guide an organization must make in deciding to keep or release those placed in leadership.
Those that were hired because nepotism or favor than on what they can do to benefit the organization.
Am I saying that favored appointments are wrong?
No, not if individuals appointed bring value to the organization.
When this is the case the one doing the appointing is viewed as a great judge of talent; even when choosing a relative, former schoolmate or a friend.
However, it’s when these people bring no added value to your operation or lead the organization errantly, emergency decisions must be made.
The logical and most pragmatic recourse would be to remove these people from their positions.
But the question still beckons: How does one fire a relative or a friend?
Learn from nature!
The situation is much like a wolf with its leg caught in a trap faced with a life or death situation.
Many wolves have gnawed off a limb if it would bring about the detriment of the whole.
Now, while I am not one to advocate chewing off the limb of an employee; I do suggest a more practical approach while keeping this in mind.
Your first responsibility is to your clients and your organization.
With that in mind, you have no choice but to cut the relative or friend loose if his/her presence adversely affects the success of your organization.
So what should you as the GodFather do?
Lose the limb and save the organization
Remember; It’s Not Personal…It’s Business!
